WHEN THE SEX IS GONE

BETTER BRADLEY PRODUCTIONS

Category: Cabaret

WINNER 2009 MELBOURNE FRINGE 'BEST CABARET' and MELBOURNE AIRPORT AWARD 'BEST NEWCOMER'. 'When the Sex is Gone' is a portrait of romance-infused eroticism, as told by a foul-mouthed split-person hermaphrodite. A stripper and a boxer, musing over broken hearts and drunken brawls, Tommy Bradson is "guaranteed to SHOCK and AMAZE".

This was an interesting show; certainly different to anything else you'll see this Fringe. The lead performer has a wonderful voice and is ably assisted by their moustached accompanist; often creating spot-on harmonies. The character is engaging, confronting and powerful, and gives an overarching impression of honesty and sorrow with a hint of vulnerability. I really enjoyed this show but, unfortunately, didn't feel particularly moved by any part of it.

An outstanding performance from a very talented man.
Don't go if you are easily offended. Do go if you believe cabaret and art is about holding up a mirror to society.

WTSIG is exactly what fringe and cabaret is about. I applaud the creators and performers for their extraordinary bravery!

Go see it - you'll never think of breakfast the same way again...

Totally inappropriate, vulgar and crass. Adored every minute of it! My father would probably have walked out after about 2 minutes.

Poor Peter and Leonie! hahaha.

Still got the blowjob for breakfast lyrics in my head.

Awesome show - made my day! =)

This is "fringe". It's waaay out there. Charley the hermaphrodite/'himaphrodite' (switches through the show) pushes the "poetic" boundaries of obscenity and disturbing verbal imagery, punctuated with theatrical ear-splitting bursts for effect and shock.
One of the most unique personas you may ever have an opportunity to listen to and then wonder - are his stories his life?, are they true? could there really be a club called "Piss Lips"?
Originality 9/10. Execution 9/10.
Appeal? -anyone's guess.

really on the fence with this one. there were moments of brilliance but just didnt live up to the potential i saw. probably more a reflection on me than the performance x

Yes, don't take your grandparents, but do check out this show.

Bradson has the most amazing dark eyes and a mesmerising quality that many performers would envy.

I think it was too long and could be edited for its next run, but it's a show that has stayed with me.

This is the most mesmerising performance I have seen... quite possibly ever. Bradson's voice drips with heartbreak, romance, brutality and beauty - whether he's speaking, singing or simply standing still. It is a performance that feels lived on stage to the viewer and it's like watching a theatre burn - exhilarating, tragic, hypnotic. It is pure joy to experience. Open your mind, your heart, your eyes, your legs, your mouth and let Charlie (and Boris) seep into every crevice.

funny, cruel, vulgar and thoroughly entertaining. Feels a bit like someone watched Hedvig and than got out a pen and paper, but apart from that it's great.

A fabulous fringy show! Eccentric and engaging, Tommy Bradson is a talent in his roles as the gender bending hermaphrodite. He sustains a brilliant energy throughout the show, entertaining with his sultry voice delivering somewhat crass yet delightfully quirky songs. Loved it!

When the Sex is Gone is probably one of the most remarkable and engaging performances I have seen recently. From the moment Tommy Bradson enters as the first half of the hermaphrodite, we are captivated by his/her story. He also does pay out the fact he is a straight man playing this role. Definitely worth a look, but probably don't take your nanna. Song highlights include: "Don't tell me to F*** Myself when I can't" and "Blowjob for Breakfast". Can't wait to see this show again.
